Important Updates: Increase to Student Maintenance Requirements & Changes to the Graduate Route

If you’re planning to study in the UK, it’s important to stay informed about recent updates that may affect your visa application and post-study plans. Two key announcements from the UK Home Office will impact international students; an increase in the financial (maintenance) requirements for Student Visa applicants from 11 November 2025, and changes to the Graduate Route coming into effect from January 2027.

Let’s break down what these changes mean for you.

1. Increased Maintenance Requirements for Students (Effective 11 November 2025)

From 11 November 2025, international students applying under the Student Route (previously known as Tier 4) will be required to show higher maintenance funds when submitting their visa applications.

This means you’ll need to demonstrate that you have enough money to cover your living expenses while studying in the UK.

Here’s what’s changing:

  • For students studying in London:
You must show £1,529 per month (up to a maximum of 9 months).
  • For students studying outside London:
You must show £1,171 per month (up to a maximum of 9 months).

Previously, these figures were lower; so the increase represents a significant adjustment. The rise reflects changes in the cost of living across the UK, especially in major cities like London.

In addition, the maximum amount of money that can be offset for accommodation has also been revised. Students applying under the new rules can now offset up to £1,529 for accommodation.

If you’re unsure what “maintenance requirement” means, it refers to the financial proof that international students must provide to show they can support themselves during their studies; including rent, food, transportation, and other living costs.

2. Changes to the Graduate Route (Effective January 2027)

The UK’s Graduate Route, which allows international students to stay and work in the UK after completing their studies, is also set to change; starting 1 January 2027.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • If you complete a UK bachelor’s or master’s degree, and you apply for the Graduate Route on or after 1 January 2027, you’ll receive 18 months of post-study work permission.
  • This is a reduction from the current 2-year (24 months) post-study stay period.
  • The change will not affect anyone who submits their Graduate Route application before 1 January 2027.

The adjustment was first announced in the UK Immigration White Paper (May 2025), as part of broader efforts to review migration policies and align post-study permissions with labour market demands.

Importantly, if you complete a PhD or other doctoral qualification, you’ll still receive the full 3-year post-study stay; this remains unchanged.

What These Changes Mean for Future Students

These policy updates mean that prospective students should plan ahead; both financially and strategically.

  • Budget early: Since the maintenance requirement is increasing, students planning for 2026 or later should start saving now to meet the new financial threshold.
  • Apply early for the Graduate Route: If you’re completing your studies in 2026, applying before January 2027 will allow you to benefit from the full two-year post-study period.
  • Stay informed: The UK immigration system often evolves to reflect economic and social factors. Staying updated can help you make better decisions about your study and work journey.
